Another key finding from this trial was that a remarkable 85.3% of participants in the kava group were rated as ‘at least improved’ by the end of the treatment period. In contrast, only 60.9% of the placebo group could say the same, which was statistically significant with a p-value of 0.002. This indicates a clear advantage for kava in helping those struggling with anxiety-related sleep issues.
Additionally, none of the patients in the kava group were rated as ‘markedly ill’ at the end of the treatment, while 17.4% of the placebo group still fell into that category. This showcases kava’s potential to not only improve sleep but also contribute to overall well-being.

Interestingly, the study also looked at anxiety levels through the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA). The results showed a significant improvement in the psychic anxiety sub-score for the kava group, with a p-value of 0.002. This means that as participants experienced better sleep, their anxiety levels also seemed to decrease, suggesting a beneficial relationship between the two outcomes. It’s a reminder that tackling anxiety could lead to better sleep, and vice versa.
Kava’s Unique Sleep Profile
One of the standout features of kava is its effect on REM sleep. Unlike many conventional sleep medications that can suppress or delay REM stages, kava does not interfere with this crucial part of the sleep cycle. Earlier research had shown that kava could actually enhance sleep spindle activity and increase periods of deep sleep without affecting REM, which is vital for restorative sleep.
In the recent trial, after the four-week treatment ended, only 11.8% of kava patients experienced a recurrence of primary symptoms during follow-up, compared to 26.1% in the placebo group. This long-term benefit hints at kava’s unique role in promoting not just immediate improvements, but potentially sustaining them.
