Kavalactones Explained: How Kava's Active Compounds Work

Kavalactones (also called kavapyrones) are the naturally occurring resinous compounds in kava root that give kava its well-known calming, relaxing effects. Researchers have identified 15 kavalactones in kava so far, but six are considered the primary active compounds: kavain, dihydrokavain, methysticin, dihydromethysticin, yangonin, and desmethoxyyangonin.

The kavalactone percentage listed on a product tells you how concentrated these active compounds are. For example, a 30% kavalactone extract contains 30 grams of kavalactones per 100 grams of material — a strong, clearly measurable concentration often used for relaxation support.*

Which Kavalactone Product is Right for You?

  • 30% Kavalactone Capsules — 300mg capsules with pure extract plus organic kava root powder. Convenient and consistent.*
  • 33% Kavalactone Powder — Concentrated powder for adding to drinks or taking directly.
  • 55% Full Spectrum Paste — CO₂ cold-extracted from roots only. Full spectrum, not isolated kavalactones. 1–2 pea-sized servings delivers a relaxed, happy experience.*

A Word on Quality

Beware of products that advertise a high kavalactone percentage but blend a tiny amount of concentrated extract with plain root powder. At Kona Kava Farm, we use an in-house HPLC system supplemented by third-party testing on every product. We use 90% lateral roots and 10% underground — the kavalactone-richest parts — and extract using only distilled water and pure organic ethanol. No harsh solvents, no animal fats.
